This curious replica of a water pump, in Broadwick (formerly Broad) Street in Soho, commemorates the discovery by Dr John Snow in 1854 that contaminated water was the cause for the spread of Cholera which was causing many deaths in this part of London at the time. You’ll find small street markets along the bottom end of Berwick Street, and a more tourist-oriented market on Rupert Street.Ĥ. One of London’s oldest coffee bars can be found at Little Italy in Frith Streetģ. And the likes of Greek, Frith and Dean Streets are also filled with entertainment venues, and cafes, bars and restaurants. The wonderful Cafe de Nata, specialising in those delectable Portugues custard tarts, the pastel de nata, is a treat indeed., as is Maitre Choux, specialising in choux pastry eclairs. Old Compton Street is the heart of London’s gay scene, and pulses night and day with busy cafes and restaurants, and pulsating bars and clubs. Carnaby Street is a delight, and a treasure trove of quirky independent retailers and smaller designer stores. Also visit Golden Square in the 1670s it was a plague pit now it’s a forma garden square, often the venue for temporary sculptures and odd works of art.Ģ. There’s also a very old, weathered statue of Charles II which also dates back to the 1670s. There’s the charming little Soho Square which dates back to the 1670s, with its curious half-timbered, slightly wonky Tudor-style building in the centre it wasn’t built in Tudor times rather it was constructed in 1895 and is now used by the gardeners. Here’s my favourite things to see in Soho:ġ. It brims with cafes, coffee shops, bars and restaurants, and has numerous entertainment venues / theatres showing (during normal, non-pandemic times) musicals and stage block-busters. It has some quirky corners, little curiosities, some pretty little squares, some small street markets, and a couple of iconic streets. It’s worth a decent explore rather than a quick pass through. Soho is roughly bounded by Regent Street, Shaftesbury Avenue, Charing Cross Road and Oxford Street. Some will try to equate it with a neighbourhood with a similar name in New York City. Most visitors to London will set foot in the neighbourhood of Soho many will have a broad concept of what specific area of the city comprises the neighbourhood, whilst others will mistakenly think they are in the neighbourhood when they are actually in Leicester Square or Covent Garden.
